Event Details

Join educator and cooking instructor Salam Al-Marayati to learn how to make delicious ful mudammas with fava beans picked from Arlington Garden's very own fava bean patch! Talk about hyperlocal :) Salam will demonstrate how to make his delectable iteration of ful mudammas (stewed fava beans), which originates in Egypt. Sign up here. **Despite being a dietary staple for thousands of years in the Mediterranean Basin, Middle East, and Africa, please be aware that fava beans (also called "broad beans") can trigger a severe reaction in people who possess the genetic condition called "favism." If you have not consumed or handled fava beans in the past, please exercise caution. ABOUT SALAM AL-MARAYATI Salam took up cooking when his wife was working as a resident in medicine and decided to stop going to McDonald’s every night. Instead he began to make a dish from the Gulf, which is a mixture of rice and chicken cooked in tomato-based broth with turmeric. His family loves to come over and eat his famous dish of red rice and chicken sprinkled with sautéed almonds and raisins. He enjoys Middle Eastern food and is excited to share his ful mudammas recipe with you! In addition to being an educator and a chef, Salam Al-Marayati is cofounder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council.
