Post Fire Series: Aiding Bioremediation Using Mineral Amendments

Join us for this free, hands-on workshop on bioremediation using mineral amendments, part of Arlington Garden's Post Fire series with SoilWise. Learn some approaches and techniques used to heal soil health in this workshop led by Dr. Daisy Rojas Vargas and Do Kyung Lee of SoilWise This is the first of two bioremediation demonstration projects taking place in the garden, with a second workshop - a Planting a Phytoremediation Demonstration Garden - taking place on Saturday, April 25. Save the date! We'll focus on the applications of minerals to aid the bioremediation process with a hands-on application of zeolite, crushed oyster shells and biochar to the lower portion of the Arlington Garden's service road nearest to Pasadena Avenue. Minerals and mineral-organic materials, such as zeolite and biochar, are able to sequester heavy metals found in the soil. When heavy metals are sequestered, they become less bioavailable in the topsoil, the air, and in the plants. This, along with bioremediation with fungi, compost, and plants can improve soil health and make the soil around us safer. This soil amendment application is taking place in the area of the garden which receives the highest amount of vehicle traffic for deliveries and services, and is closest to a major thoroughfare. Please wear long sleeves, pants and closed toe shoes. Bring a bottle of water as well. Masks and gloves will be provided, or you may bring your own. This free workshop is made possible thanks to a Wildfire Recovery Fund - Community Healing and Restoration grant from the California Community Foundation. Limited space is available and capped at a max of 20 people.
